2DOS Based Quick Start
This chapter describes how to quickly get your DOS-based system set up and running using the
VL-486-3 CPU card.
Introduction
A minimum DOS based run time system requires the CPU card, a BIOS, and a boot device (flash
file system, floppy drive, or hard drive) containing an operating system and an application
program. In many cases a video card, keyboard and monitor are added to this list, however, the
VL-486-3 does not demand their presence in order to boot.
When a hard drive or 5¼” floppy disk is used, it is necessary to configure the startup information
stored in CMOS RAM. The most convenient method of setting up this information is by using a
keyboard and monitor (requires addition of a video card), however, a method is available to use
COM2 to interact with the setup program.
Typical components of a DOS based system include:
• VL-486-3 CPU Card
• STD or STD 32 Card Cage
• One or two Floppy Disk Drives (3½” or 5¼”)
• One or two IDE Hard Disk Drives
• Standard PC/AT keyboard
• Video/Keyboard Card
• Video Monitor
• Power Supply
