4.3.1 Shunt Resistor Selection
The value of shunt resistor is calculated by the following equation.
RSH = V-----S--I-C-S---(C--r--e---f-)
Where VSC(ref) is the SC reference voltage of comparator negative input and ISC is the
current of SC detection level.
In the Figure 8, VSC(ref) is determined by voltage divider(R27, R28). For example, when
the control voltage Vctr is 5V, R27=10kand R28=1kthen VSC(ref) is 0.45Vtyp.. The
SC reference voltage should be selected according to the application and user’s
demand. The resistor for voltage divider should be a precision resistor such as 1% to
decrease tolerance.
The maximum value of SC protection level should be set less than the repetitive peak
collector current in the datasheet considering the tolerance of shunt resistor.
For example, the maximum peak collector current of IKCS12F60B(2)A is 18Apeak,
RSH(min) = 0.45 18 = 0.025
So the recommended value of shunt resistor is over 25mfor IKCS12F60B(2)A.
For the power rating of the shunt resistor, the below lists should be considered.
- Maximum load current of inverter (Irms)
- Shunt resistor value at Tc=25°C (RSH)
- Power derating ratio of shunt resistor at TSH=100°C
- Safety margin
And the power rating is calculated by following equation.

For example, In case of IKCS12F60B(2)A and RSH=25m
- Max. load current of inverter : 6Arms
- Power derating ratio of shunt resistor at TSH=100°C : 80%
- Safety margin : 30%
PSH = -6---2----×-----0---.-0-0---.2-8---5----×-----1----.-3-- = 1.46W
So the proper power rating of shunt resistor is over 2W.
