ECT3408
Description
The ECT34 08 is a 1.5M Hz constant frequency current
mode PWM step-down co nverter. It is ideal for po rtable
equipment re quiring very high current up to 1.2A from
single-cell Lit hium-ion batt eries whil e st ill achieving over
90% efficiency during peak load conditions. The ECT3408
also can run at 100% duty cycle for low dropout operation,
extending battery life in p ortable systems while lig ht load
operation provides very lo w output ripple for noise
sensitive applications.
The ECT3408 can supply up to 1.2A o utput load cu rrent
from a 2.5V t o 5.5V input voltage and the outp ut voltage
can be regulated as lo w as 0.6V. The high swit ching
frequency mi nimizes the size of external co mponents
while keeping switching l osses low. T he internal slope
compensation setting all ows the device to operate with
smaller indu ctor value s to optimize size and provide
efficient operation.
The ECT3408 is available in adjustable (0.6V to VIN) and
fixed (1.8V) output voltage versio ns. The d evice is
available i n a Pb-fre e, 3x 3mm TDFN-1 0 pa ckage a nd is
rated over the -40°C to+85°C temperature range.

Inductor Selection
For most designs, the ECT3408 operates with inductor values of 1µH to 4.7µH. Low inductance values are physically
smaller, but require faster switching, which results in some efficiency loss. The indu ctor value can be deriv ed from
the following equation:
L = VOUT * (VIN VOUT )
VIN * ΔI L * f osc
Where ΔIL is indu ctor ripple current. Large value in ductors lower ripple current and small val ue inductors result in
high ripple currents. Choose inductor ripple current approximately 30% of the maximum load current 1200mA, or
ΔIL = 360mA.
For output voltages above 2.0V, when light-load efficiency is important, the minimum recommended inductor is 2.2µH
Manufacturer's specifications list both the inductor.
DC current rating, which is a thermal limit ation and the peak current rating, which i s determined by the saturation
characteristics. The indu ctor should not show any appreciable saturation u nder n ormal l oad conditions. Some
inductors may meet the peak and average current ratings yet result in excessive losses due to a high DCR.
Always consider the losses associated with the DCR and its effect on the total converter efficiency when selecting an
inductor. For optimum voltage- positioning load transients, choose an inductor with DC series resistance in the 20m
to 100m range. F or h igher ef ficienc y at hea vy loads (above 200mA), or minimal load regulation (but som e
transient overshoot), the resistance should be kept below 100m. The DC current rating of the inductor should be at
least equal to the maximu m load current plus half the ripple current to prevent core saturation (1200mA + 360mA).
Table 2 lists some typical surface mount inductors that meet target applications for the ECT3408.
For example, the 2.2μH SD3118-2R2-R inductor selected from Coiltronics has a 74mDCR and a 2.00ADC current
rating. At full load, the inductor DC loss is 106mW which gives a 5% loss in efficiency for a 1200mA, 1.8 V output.
