The Future of Analog IC Technology
MPS CONFIDENTIAL AND PROPRIETARY INFORMATION – SUPA USE ONLY
DESCRIPTION
FEATURES
The MP1582 is a high frequency step-down
switching regulator with integrated internal
high-side, high voltage power MOSFET. It
Lprovides 2A output with current mode control
for fast loop response and easy compensation.
IAThe wide 4.5V to 28V input range
accommodates a variety of step-down
Tapplications, including those in automotive
systems. A 100µA operational quiescent current
allows use in battery-powered applications.
NHigh power conversion efficiency over a wide
Eload range is achieved by scaling down the
switching frequency at light load condition to
D Ereduce the switching and gate driving losses.
I TThe frequency foldback prevents inductor
current runaway during startup and thermal
Fshutdown provides reliable, fault tolerant
Uoperation.
N BThe MP1582 is available in thermally enhanced
O ISOIC8 package.

N BOutput Rectifier Diode
O IThe output rectifier diode supplies the current to
the inductor when the high-side switch is off. To
C Rreduce losses due to the diode forward voltage
and recovery times, use a Schottky diode.
TChoose a diode whose maximum reverse
voltage rating is greater than the maximum
S Sinput voltage, and whose current rating is
P Igreater than the maximum load current. Table 2
lists example Schottky diodes and
Dmanufacturers.

Central Semi
Input Capacitor
The input current to the step-down converter is
discontinuous, therefore a capacitor is required to
supply the AC current to the step-down converter
while maintaining the DC input voltage. Use low
ESR capacitors for the best performance. Ceramic
capacitors are preferred, but tantalum or low-ESR
electrolytic capacitors may also suffice.
Since the input capacitor (C1) absorbs the input
switching current it requires an adequate ripple
current rating. The RMS current in the input
capacitor can be estimated by:
IC1 = ILOAD ×
VOUT
VIN
×⎜⎜⎛1−
⎝
VOUT
VIN
⎟⎞
⎟
⎠
The worse case condition occurs at VIN = 2VOUT,
